The Evangelical Library opens a new Puritan & Research Centre – and announces a new bursary scheme for researchers

The Evangelical Library will formally open its newly refurbished Research Centre at its central London premises just off Baker Street on Tuesday, 26 April. The Centre will provide new work and study facilities, with easy access to the Library's unique collection of 80,000 evangelical books, its stock of rare Puritan books and with new Internet access.

Centre Opening

The Centre itself is being named in honour of the work and memory of evangelical pastor/teacher Robert Sheehan, who was for a time Chairman of the trustees of the Library. A plaque with the inscription The Robert Sheehan Puritan and Research Centre will be unveiled by Mr Sheehan's widow Wendy at its formal opening next Tuesday.

Also speaking at the launch will be Mr Sheehan's successor at Welwyn Evangelical Church , Pastor Mostyn Roberts. Guests at the event will include friends of the Library, trustees past and current, various trust supporters, staff and members of the media.

New bursary scheme

At the opening ceremony Professor Helm, the present Chairman of the Trustees, will also be announcing details of a new bursary scheme, the ‘Geoffrey Williams Bursaries', named in the memory of the Library's founder. The bursaries will carry an honorarium of a £500 grant for travel, subsistence and other expenses for students, pastors or other researchers who can demonstrate that their work would benefit from a period of concentrated study/research using the Libraries new research facilities.

It is anticipated that the bursary would typically last over several weeks, and will normally be taken up in the summer months, but which should be concluded before the end of 2005. It is hoped to run the scheme annually.

Letters of application, stating the proposed area of interest, the qualifications of the applicant, and the period of intended study at the Library are being welcomed by the Library with immediate effect. A letter of reference should be included with the application and should be addressed to: Professor Paul Helm, The Geoffrey Williams' Bursaries, The Evangelical Library, 78a Chiltern Street, London, W1U 5HB. Letters by email are also encouraged, to be sent to bursaries@elib.org.uk

Host for the opening Professor Helm explains, “It is quite a moment in the life of the Library. First, to be able to provide important new aids to serious research – and second, to honour two men who did so much to ensure this unique spiritual resource was part of their lasting legacy to us all.”
